Selangkah Lagi Petakan Jaringan Otak

MPI for Medical Research Hasil pemetaan jaringan neuron otak tikus putih.

Strong Quake Shakes Japan's Fukushima

TOKYO,  - A strong 6.4-magnitude earthquake shook northeast Japan’s Fukushima prefecture, home to a crippled nuclear power plant, early Sunday, but there was no risk of tsunami, seismologists said. Local police said they had no immediate reports of casualties or major damage from the tremor which hit at 3:54am (1854 GMT Saturday).
The quake was centred around 100 kilometres (60 miles) south-southeast of Fukushima city, Japan Meteorological Agency and the US Geological Survey said, at a depth of about 40 kilometres.
It caused no new damage to the Fukushima Daiichi plant, which was crippled by a massive 9.0 quake and ensuing tsunami on March 11, public network NHK said, quoting the government’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency.
The devastating March disaster left about 20,000 people dead or missing and triggered an atomic crisis at the nuclear plant. Japan, located at the junction of four tectonic plates, experiences 20 percent of the strongest quakes recorded on Earth each year.

Recurring Source of Indonesia-Malaysia Quarrels

Reuters Women migrant workers sit down as officers take their photograph for their passport at the Immigration office in Tangerang, Indonesias Banten province, March 8, 2011. Around 1,000 women migrant workers a day apply for their passport to work in Middle East countries. In 2010 as many as 301,000 Indonesian migrant workers, including 279,974 women, went to Middle East countries, including Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Syria, Qatar and the Arab Emirates to work as housekeepers and babysitters, immigration data showed.
JAKARTA,  - Migrant worker problems are always a source of major squabbles between Indonesia and Malaysia, according to former Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Migrant worker cases are treated merely as an economic issue between manpower recruitment agencies in Indonesia and Malaysia. "They only want to reap huge profits," Anwar said.
Speaking in a public discussion on access to justice here Saturday, Anwar said he was also concerned about the poor ways in which the Malaysian government was managing the treatment of foreign migrant workers.
In protecting all migrant workers, Anwar also demands the Malaysian government’s legal improvement and its citizen perception on migrant workers also to abolish caning as punishment because it was an inhumane penalty.
"They (migrant workers) are human too, they are not slaves, they came to Malaysia to work so they should be treated as humans, and with proper consideration," said the Malaysian opposition leader.
Indonesian illegal migrant workers came from the lower income groups, therefore they must be humanely treated. Besides abolishing caning as a way to punish alleged wrongdoers, Anwar said, trials of delinquent migrant workers must be done transparently and their families must be allowed to visit them regardless of whether or not they were guilty.
Anwar also said it was unlawful (haram) for Malaysian employers to hire Indonesian workers and not pay their wages in the agreed amount. According to Anwar, the recent developing modus done by the Malaysian employers is by only paying 1.5 years of wages to workers who had worked two years, then call the police to arrest the migrant worker, so that the latter’s remaining wages need not be paid.
"Imagine if thousands of people are treated in that way. How much money are the employers taking from the workers? This is unlawful," said Anwar.
Earlier, Indonesia imposed a moratorium on or temporary suspension of the dispatch of workers to Malaysia which had been going on since June 2009, and recently an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) was signed to lift the moratorium on the sending of Indonesian workers to Malaysia.
Based on data from the Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry, Malaysia became a country that has a list of cases most Indonesian citizens under death sentence by 233 workers, while China is ranked second with 29 people, and Saudi Arabia is ranked third with 28 people. Drug abuse case led up to 180 Indonesian workers threatened by the death sentence, while murder cases at about 50 percent.

How to Indulge Yourself while Being in Lombok

AFP This photo taken on July, 2010 shows tourists resting on a small island located in West Lombok. Indonesia is to investigate the illegal sale of 13 islands in the latest of a series of corruption scandals in one of Asias most popular tourist destinations, officials said on May 5, 2011. The National Land Agency (BPN) has been accused of giving ownership papers for the islets off Lombok island, near Bali, to a number of individuals and companies, West Lombok administration spokesman Ispan Junaidi told.

Lombok island located in West Nusa Tenggara is almost head-to-head with its neighbour island, Bali, in competition of attracting foreign and domestic tourists. Lombok can be categorized as one of the compelete tourist destinations with its fantastic natural resources starting from Mount Rinjani to exotic and rarely visited beaches including Kuta beach, Aan Cape, as well as the attractive small islets (known as gili).
There are six ways that can be applied by backpackers or non-backpackers to maximize fun of having a vacation in the island.
1. Be well-prepared with itineraries. Spontanities in preparing them sometimes can be more exciting but they are supposed to be the subject to skip if you only have time contraints to have a vacation. Find as much as possible the information of destinations from internet such as accomodations, transportations, distances and durations of visiting one place to the others. Doing them will hinder you from conflict of ideas or spending time on discussing destinations especially if you take the vacation in groups.
One of the sites, www.visitlomboksumbawa.net helps you find the information on festivals usually held in Lombok. As an example, Malena Sapi (cow race) is held this month in West Lombok and Senggigi Festival is held in Batu Layar village, Lobar regency, West Lombok.
2. It takes more money if you have to rent a car compared with taking a public transportation in Lombok such as Bemo (shuttle bus) or Cidomo (horse cart). An 8-hour car rent of Avanza provided with its driver can be charged for local rate at Rp300,000. The service will enable you to reach areas not served by public transportations as bemo or cidomo are rarely found in Mataram and mostly found out of the city.
The car rent also offers a free of charge tour guide service besides a driver. The drivers know very well the tourist attractions mostly visited by tourists or places rarely visited but abundant with spectacular natural resources as they are natives of the local areas. Don't forget to get the fixed rate of the service to prevent you from having arguments when paying the bill after using the service.
3. Extra cash needed. No charges for entering handicraft centers in Banyumulek Village, Sasak tribe traditional village, Sade village, and Lingsar castle. However, there will be boxes of donation placed at several places that need your volunteer contributions of around Rp5,000-10,000 to help develop local villages.
The amount of money will be needed for volunteer payment of local tour guides that are able to tell you in details of stories and histories on local tourist attractions. That's why it's necessary to prepare small changes of Rp5,000-10,000.
4. Drop by the rarely visited places when taking a trip around Lombok Island as there are many unique places to explore besides common places visited by tourists. Thefore it is necessary to leave as early as 7 in the morning to make sure you have enough time to explore the places. During the time, you can take a view of Sasak farmers planting seeds of paddy in the morning mist. The rising sun shining the greeny paddy fields completes the lovely view.
The moment can be taken by photographers who want to get the scenes of farmers planting paddys, male farmers cultivating fields, as well irregular buyers purchasing dry unhusked rice from farmers. You can take time mingling with locals by greeting and introducing yourself to them. Gradually they will find the comfort to share with you about their daily life and activities as Sasak farmers. If lucky, you will be invited by them to have breakfast on the edge of paddy fields by them.
Stop by the open traditional markets located at road sides. There are days, Mondays and Thursdays, in which all traders from the whole regions of Lombok gather at spots such as Sengkol market, Central Lombok.
5. Be ready with sunblocks. Lombok island is well-known for its exotic beaches lying from West Lombok to South Lombok. Senggigi Beach and three gili lie; Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air, lie in West Lombok. While fascinating beaches; Kuta, Tanjung Aan and Mawun beach, lie in South Lombok.
There several kinds of activities that you can do on the beaches such as sunbathing, snorkeling, diving, as well as surfing. Sunblock is compulsory to carry along as scorching sunshine on the beaches can get you sunburn. At least by applying sunblock, you do not have to be bothered thinking about being sunburn and can have more fun doing kinds of activities on the beaches.
6. Be ready to have parties on Gili and Senggigi! Night festivities in the island are minimal, not like the ones in Bali popular with its 24-hour festive life. The center of city looks quiet from sort of activities starting at 10 pm.
However, if you still insist on spending the night life in Lombok, you can head to Senggigi where dozens of cafes, karaoke pubs, as well as seafood restaurants are open till late at night.
Enjoy the beauty of night life if you happen to stay in Gili Trawangan. Tourist will be lured by festivities and music entertainment and they can dance to their hearts' contentment until morning comes.

Mazda Quarterly Loss on Tsunami-Hit Production

A Japanese Mazda MX5 model is displayed during the press days of the Paris Motor Show on September 30, 2010. The show will open to public on October 2, 2010. Carmakers from across the globe gather today at the Paris Motor Show to premiere dozens of new models and showcase a whole range of electric cars ready to hit the road.
TOKYO,  — Mazda is reporting a 25.5 billion yen ($327 million) loss for the fiscal first quarter after its vehicle production was sorely hurt by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
Mazda Motor Corp. is among the automakers not only in Japan but around the world whose production was disrupted after key parts failed to arrive from suppliers damaged by the March 11 disaster in northeastern Japan.
Mazda's red ink for the April-June quarter, released Friday, was worse than the 2.1 billion yen loss racked up the same period the previous year.

Lombok Int'l Airport to Operate Soon

JAKARTA,  - West Nusa Tenggara or NTB province near Bali Island will soon see the completion of its Lombok International Airport that can also accommodate Air Bus 330 or Boeing 767 aircraft.
Lombok International Airport (BIL), located in Tanah Awu, Pujut sub-district, Central Lombok district, is about 40 kilometers south of the old Mataram Selaparang Airport.
The BIL worth 945.8 billion rupiah has a passenger terminal measuring 21 thousand square meters or four times wider than that of Selaparang Mataram Airport which is only 4,796 square meters. One US dollar is about 9,000 rupiah.
The operational and technical director of state-owned airport management company PT Angkasa Pura-I, Haryoso Catur Prayitno, said in Central Lombok recently, the BIL’s passenger accommodating capacity is three million passengers a year with a parking area of 17,500 square meters, while Selaparang airport’s parking lot is only 7,334 square meters.
In addition, the BIL has a runway of 2,750 meters x 40 meters square, so it can accommodate ten Air Bus 330 or Boeing 767 air planes, Haryoso said. The Lombok International Airport, according to Harsono, is located on 551 hectares of land, which is about 40 kilometers south of Mataram Selaparang Airport.
Haryoso made the statement when accompanying the NTB governor M Zainul Majdi at time of inaugurating the accelerating program of the road infrastructure development in Praya, Central Lombok district on Saturday. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is expected to inaugurate the Lombok International Airport on October 1 this year, the governor said.
"The president will inaugurate the airport. He even has asked the state secretariat to manage a two-day lodging in Central Lombok," the governor said.
The governor knew the president’s readiness to inaugurate the international airport when he met President Yudhoyono at the presidential palace in Jakarta on July 21, 2011. His meeting with the president at the moment relating to the matters of governance and development in the region.
Governor M Zainul Majdi is chairman of the Democratic party provincial executive board, while Yudhoyono is the chief patron of the ruling Democratic party. In addition to inaugurating the airport, the president is also expected to have meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister which will take place in Central Lombok district.
In the meantime, Vice President Boediono when visiting NTB province on July 11, asked the airport management company PT Angkasa Pura-I, Haryoso Catur Prayitno to accelerate the airport construction development.
"The sooner is the better," the vice president said, adding that the Lombok International Airport is important for the NTB’s economic development, especially relating to the provincial wish to prioritize the tourism development.
"I feel since the beginning that this is the key point for NTB’s further development. It’s very strategic, especially when tourism is managed as the provincial focus of attention, so airport is very important," Boediono said.
The Vice President then got around the Lombok International Airport terminal building that is still unfinished yet.
"God willing, on September 30, everything is finished so it can be fully operated on October 1," Haryoso said, explaining that the airport simulations will be conducted on September 5-8, 2011.
Actually the Lombok International Airport was initially expected to be operational in July 2011, but it was postponed due to the expansion of the airport terminal area from 14,000 square meters to 21,000 square meters. Thus, the BIL project work was increased.
NTB has a number of tourist resorts, among others the Senggigi beach, Cakranegara, Gili Air, Gili Meno, Gili Trawangan, Gili Bidara, Gili Lawang, Narmada park and Mayura park. Apart from that, Mount Rinjani, Kuta Beach Lombok, the water falls of Sendang Gile, Tiu Kelep, Benang Stokel, Benang Kelambu.
The Lombok Island topography is dominated by the Mount Rinjani (3,726 meters above sea level) which is the third highest in Indonesia. Aside from that Lombok also offered its culinary including "Ayam Taliwang" or a kind of fried chicken and "Plecing Kankung", vegetable like sauteed kale which can lure more tourists to come.
In many ways, Lombok is similar to Bali, and foreign tourists began recognizing Lombok in the decade of the 1990s. About 80 percent of the Island population is the Sasak tribe, a tribe that is still close to the Balinese ethnic, but mostly converted to Islam.
The remaining population is Balinese, Javanese, Chinese and Arabic. With lots of tourism potentials, the NTB province has a dire need to have an international airport because the aviation transport limitations has so far become one of obstacles to develop tourism sector in this province towards the Lombok-Sumbawa 2012 Visit. The Lombok-Sumbawa 2012 Visit has targeted as many as one million tourist arrivals in this province.

Jakarta Hosts First ASEAN Regulatory Reform Dialogue

The lights at the buildings at the main business district are turned off during Earth Hour in Jakarta, Indonesia, Saturday, March, 26, 2011.
JAKARTA,  - ASEAN integration made another step forward, as delegates met for the First ASEAN Regulatory Reform Dialogue (ARRD) in Jakarta recently, a press statement of the Jakarta-based ASEAN Secretariat said here on Friday.
The Dialogue chaired by Dato Lim Jock Hoi, the Permanent Secretary of Brunei Darussalam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, was an important avenue to exchange views and information on regulatory reform efforts and policy measures, and to discuss measures and activities to take forward ASEAN initiatives on regulatory reform related issues, the Secretariat said.
This effort is a positive and pro-active step towards looking into ways to deal with impediments to trade, and investment facilitation, as ASEAN advances its economic integration. Specialists in structural and regulatory reforms from the World Bank, and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC)Secretariat, also shared their knowledge, tools, approaches and experiences at the Dialogue.
In the present complex and interconnected world, regulations assume a greater role than ever before as a fundamental tool of government, and an integral part of a well-functioning economy. Regulatory reform is a multi-faceted task that involves various stakeholders, and it requires co-operation between all levels and all stakeholder groups in ASEAN, namely government administration, business, and peoples.
Dato Lim said that "ASEAN is diverse and there is no ’one size fits all’ formulation to addressing regulatory reform but there is scope for a degree of regulatory coherence in many areas, especially in areas committed under the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Blueprint".
He further elaborated that "undertaking regulatory reform will never be an easy task and it is essential to start the process of socialising the issue of regulatory reform within ASEAN today".
During the Dialogue, each ASEAN country presented the progress, challenges and issues related to regulatory and structural reform that has and is being undertaken in the areas of trade in services, investment facilitation and transport.
The Members then exchanged views on their respective reform efforts and discussed on the possibility of cooperation in these three areas at the regional level. Indonesia is the current ASEAN Chair.

Long Line of Trucks Again Seen in Merak

MERAK, - A line of thousands of trucks was on Friday seen again at Cikuasa Atas, Banten province, waiting to enter Merak port for the ferry service to Sumatra.
"No queue of trucks was seen on the toll road but it was based on monitoring at 1.46 am just now," PT Marga Mandala Sakti staffer Nasrudin said here on Friday.
Kodir, a truck driver carrying staple foods to Palembang, South Sumatra, said he had been in line from the Cikuasa Atas flyover in Merak, Cilegon, since 7.15 am.
"I have been in line for several hours. I heard from the ASDP (ferry service company) that the line would not be too long and they need not spend the night on the road," he said.
He said however he was pessimistic. "How could I believe in them. What has happened so far is I always have to queue in Cikuasa for days," he said.
Achim Hashari shared his view saying that a long queue in the Merak port was a common view. "What is certain is if a long line has occurred it would take days to cut," he said.
He however said that he could understand the situation. "I understand the situation in the country. We have a lot of shortcomings," he said.
For the future he hoped solutions could be found so that the problem could be overcome.
"I heard there would be more roro (roll on roll off) boats coming. I hope the boats are seaworthy."

UFO Shoots across Texas Sky

Visitors A bright white light dropped out of the sky live on breakfast TV in Fort Worth, Texas

If aliens are real then it appears they are becoming savvier at getting our attention. Early risers in Texas got a surprise when a UFO shot through the sky live on breakfast TV yesterday.
Sharp eyed viewers spotted the white light flash across the screen as local station KXAS showed a traffic camera looking across Fort Worth at 5:40am. In the top right of the video a bright light drops out of the sky and disappears.
A slow-motion replay of the footage appears to show a faint light veering off at an angle to the right of the picture. Station managers have called in UFO investigators to review the footage.
Viewers speculated that it could be a shooting star or possibly an insect reflecting light from the television tower where the camera is mounted. But others said they had seen the bright light with their own eyes.
'I was sitting outside my neighbors house and saw the flash of light in the sky go over the trees. Bill my neighbor saw it too,' a viewer wrote on the station's website.
'This looks more like a meteor that has reached the Earth's atmosphere but due to the severe stress of gravity at hyper speeds has been redirected,' wrote another.

SBY: Indonesia Has Well-Prepared Development Plan, Strategy

PALEMBANG,  - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said that the nation has a well-prepared development plan and strategy, and therefore he was optimistic the development targets would be achieved.
"I am optimistic it’s achievable," Yudhoyono said when speaking at a coordinating meeting of Sumatra governors here on Friday.
Indonesia has short, middle and long term development plans, he said. Besides, Indonesia has also four development strategies, namely pro growth, pro poor, pro employment growth, and pro environment.
He said there were four reasons why Indonesia could achieve the development targets. First, Indonesia has huge potential in terms of geography, natural resources, and human resources.
Second, Indonesia managed to revive and survive during the economic crisis some time back. Third, Indonesia has rapid economic growth profile both in the context of Asia and the world.
Fourth, the Indonesian economy keeps on growing despite some internal problems such as concerning infrastructure, weak low enforcement, and bureaucracy.
Therefore, the head of state asked all parties to cooperate in order to eradicate all obstacles in order to achieve the development targets. Indonesia has the assets, and now it needs the determination and commitment of its people to work together.
"Just do it, let’s do it together."

NASA Stasiun Antariksa Internasional (ISS).

East Java Governor Rejects Call for Rice Import

Reuters Workers unload sacks of rice from a warehouse that belongs to Indonesias state procurement agency, Bulog, for distribution to the nations provinces, in Jakarta May 13, 2011. Indonesia has put aside 570,000 hectares of land to produce an extra two million tonnes of rice, which will reduce the likelihood of Southeast Asias biggest economy importing any more rice this year.

SURABAYA,  - East Java Governor Soekarwo rejected a call of the Indonesian Farmers Association (HKTI) to import rice soon.
"East Java still has enough rice stocks. It even still has a rice surplus of one million tons. The rice is still with the farmers and has not yet been bought by Bulog," the East Java governor said here on Wednesday.
The governor will not question the central government’s policy to import rice as long as the imported rice was not distributed to East Java’s market.
"If you want to see East Java’s rice stocks please don’t see them in Bulog’s warehouses but go to the farmers," the governor said at the building of the regional legislative assembly (DPRD). The faction of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP also has expressed a rejection of the importation of rice by Surabaya.
"Our faction refused the proposal for rice importation in East Java," PDIP spokesman at the DPRD Sugiono said.
He even regretted the performance of the national logistics agency Bulog which was not able to meet its target of purchasing 3.5 million tons from farmers. In the meantime, DPRD’s Commission B chairman Renville Antonio said that East Java did not need to import rice, saying that rice at the farmers’ level was yet to be absorbed so that any import would derive price down.

Pertamina to Raise July, August Oil-Product Imports

Pertamina

JAKARTA,  - Indonesia's PT Pertamina will raise imports of low-octane gasoline and gasoil for July and August in anticipation of higher demand during the Islamic festive season of Ramadan in late August, a spokesman at the state-owned company said Thursday.
Pertamina will raise imports of 88 RON gasoline to 8.4 million barrels in both July and August, Mochamad Harun told a news conference. Pertamina normally imports between 5.5 million and 6.5 million barrels of the products a month.
Harun said that the company will also boost gasoil imports for July and August to 4.4 million barrels from its usual quantity of 2.5 million barrels a month.

Indonesia 2Q GDP Growth Likely 'Not Less' than 6.5Pct on Year

Reuters Vendors set up their makeshift stalls next to a railway track in Jakarta March 3, 2011. Indonesias inflation slowed in February as food prices went down for first time in four years, easing pressure on the central bank to raise its key overnight benchmark interest rate on Friday for a second month in a row after a 25 basis points rise in February to 6.75 pct.

JAKARTA, Indonesia's economic growth in the second quarter was likely “not less“ than the first quarter's expansion of 6.5% from a year earlier, supported by strong exports and investment spending, Chief Statistician Rusman Heriawan said Thursday.
Heriawan said private consumption also continued to grow during the period, supporting growth in the country's gross domestic product.
The official Central Statistics Agency will likely announce the April-June GDP data next week. Bank Indonesia earlier this month slightly revised its forecast for full-year economic growth to between 6.3% and 6.5% from 6.0%-6.5% previously.

Keragaman Spesies Mekongga Memukau Dunia

Perubahan Iklim Ancam Kedamaian

(National Geographic Indonesia)

Australia Has Some of World's Most Expensive Parking

Reuters Monopoly promotions staff administer free parking tickets during Monopolys 75th anniversary celebration on XXX on August 25, 2010 in Sydney, Australia. In celebration of the anniversary, Monopolys distributors in Australia provided free parking on Sydney streets associated with the board game, Oxford, Regent, Park Streets and Railway Square and Mr. Monopoly handed real and Monopoly notes out to passers-by. Global celebrations included London, Atlantic City, Mexico and Singapore.

SYDNEY, Sydney and Melbourne have some of the most expensive parking rates in the world, according to research released Tuesday, as both cities try to encourage people to leave their cars at home.
The Colliers International Parking Rate Survey has Oslo as the priciest place to park at $US89.04 a day, followed by Copenhagen at US$73.11, then Melbourne on US$69.53 and Sydney at US$67.42. The Indonesian capital Jakarta has the cheapest daily parking of the 156 cities surveyed at just 92 cents.
Colliers national director of research Nerida Conisbee said council and government levies had pushed up costs in major Australian cities’ central business districts (CBDs). “In Sydney and Melbourne’s CBDs councils are actively discouraging people driving into the city,” she said, adding that the strong Australian dollar had also increased the relative cost of parking.
Earlier this month, the Economist Intelligence Unit’s biennial cost of living survey showed Sydney and Melbourne are now the sixth and seventh most expensive cities on the planet, respectively.
It attributed the rising cost of living to the soaring Aussie dollar, which this year passed parity with the greenback and was trading Tuesday at above 108 US cents, having spiked from around 50 US cents a decade ago.

Is A Cuddle Better than Sex?

Corbis Romance: Hugging can keep the love alive just as well as sex (posed by models)
By Flic Everett

Recently, I met a few close female friends for dinner. As is the way on these occasions, the talk swiftly turned to relationships.
Tellingly, the topic of marital sex — or more accurately, the lack of it — was a big issue among this group of fortysomething women, many of whom have either young children, husbands with demanding jobs or high levels of financial stress.
‘We hardly ever have sex these days,’ admitted my friend and lecturer Jo, 37.
According to conventional wisdom, she and her husband of many years, David, 44, could be on the verge of divorce. After all, it’s a long-held tenet that lack of sex in a marriage is a sure sign that the emotional end is nigh. However, Jo insists that the lack of action underneath the covers isn’t affecting their relationship.
‘We cuddle all the time,’ she explains. ‘We go to sleep holding each other, we always have a big hug before we go off to work and we lie entwined on the sofa together watching TV at night. If we didn’t have that daily contact, I’d feel as if I was just living with a flatmate. But not having sex simply isn’t a problem for us.’
Perhaps it’s not surprising that we set so much store by sex. After all, there’s so much focus on it in films and on TV that it’s all too easy to believe that diminished passion signals a marriage in terminal decline.
But according to new research, the frequency of cuddling is a far better indicator of the strength of a relationship than how often you’re swinging from the chandeliers.
‘Cuddling provides not just sensual pleasure, but also a feeling of comfort, security and companionship, all of which are just as important to a relationship as sex,’ explains Paula Hall, relationship expert for online dating service Parship.
In fact, maintaining an intimate connection without the wild abandon of the hormonal early days can be vital for a happy relationship.
‘The advantage of non-sexual intimacy is that couples often use this time together to talk about their emotional lives,’ says Paula. ‘Whereas when sex is their only way of getting close, couples who find emotional openness difficult often rely on making love to help them connect. They can find themselves missing out on other levels of intimacy.’
Many other women I spoke to would agree. ‘My husband Ben and I split up last year,’ says Lydia Kay, 39, an office manager. ‘Sex was never a problem because we always found each other physically attractive. But we communicated less and less emotionally and, in the end, it wasn’t enough to keep us together.’
If sex is the focus, it can mean that emotional problems are never discussed — whereas non-sexual touching, such as cuddling and stroking, encourages more relaxed bonding and intimate conversation, due in large part to the crucial ‘cuddle hormone’ oxytocin.
‘Oxytocin is produced by touch and, as well as making us feel good, it also inspires us to touch more,’ says Paula. ‘That means that the more you touch, the closer you feel and the more you want to touch.’
Once assumed to be related only to childbirth, because of the role it plays in both encouraging contractions and then chemically bonding mother and newborn, recent research suggests that oxytocin’s ability to promote feelings of calm, love and connection also extends to couples in monogamous relationships.
The feeling of ‘melding’ that happens when you gaze into a loved one’s eyes, and the after-effects of calm and well-being that follow even non-sexual physical intimacy, could all be down to this miraculous hormone.
‘We used to think that oxytocin was found only in the pregnant uterus, but in fact it’s found in many sites in the body,’ says clinical psychiatrist and author Dr Brenda Davies.
‘It’s been called “the love hormone” and its levels in our blood certainly increase when we hug, when we feel loving and even when we stroke a beloved pet. So it has a huge role to play in intimacy — and not just of the sexual kind.’
This wonder-hormone may even help you to broach difficult subjects. New research suggests that oxytocin can prevent the body’s ‘freeze’ response to threat, and reduce ‘fight-or-flight’ panic.
So if you have a tricky discussion about money or the kids coming up, a big cuddle before you begin talking is the perfect way to approach a difficult subject. Oxytocin has also been shown to decrease blood pressure and the stress hormone cortisol, which has been linked to weight gain and a depressed immune system.
‘It even plays a part in raising our self-esteem and, therefore, improves our capacity to have healthy, close relationships,’ says Dr Davies. ‘It’s also a powerful natural anti-inflammatory, and has anti-ageing properties — one reason why people living isolated lives, with little human touch, can age prematurely.’
Experiments with animals have shown that it can play a major role in ‘pair-bonding’ among certain species — like the adoring prairie vole, which mates for life and ‘cuddles’ its chosen partner during lengthy grooming sessions. The same urge to be physically close without necessarily having sex is evident in humans.
One study suggests that after the intense sexual passion of the first few months, partners become ‘imprinted’ on each other. Once bonded, just the sight of your partner triggers a surge of oxytocin and a need for physical closeness that can be satisfied simply by cuddling.
This is good news for couples who still love each other but can’t summon the energy for seduction on a nightly basis.
‘Steve can live without sex, but he gets much more bad-tempered if we haven’t cuddled for a while,’ confirms Susie Gould, 34, a teacher. ‘He’s harder to talk to and it’s as though our connection’s snapped.
‘But if we have a glass of wine and cuddle up on the sofa for a chat, he visibly relaxes — I can almost feel the tension leaving his body and we can talk about anything.’
While men and women produce equal amounts of oxytocin, its effects are intensified by oestrogen, meaning women tend to have functionally higher concentrations of the hormone.
A Cambridge University study found that men who were given higher doses of oxytocin displayed greater levels of empathy with other’s emotions.
‘When this hormone’s flowing freely, it puts us in a peaceful, happy state of mind,’ says Dr Keith Kendrick, who led the study. ‘It helps us feel emotionally connected to whoever’s the source of that touch and gets men’s oxytocin levels on a par with women’s.
‘For many women, you could say oxytocin is a godsend, as it makes men more empathetic.’
Of course, it’s often assumed that women are happy with a platonic cuddle, while men are always eager to get down to business. But another recent study from the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction suggests a different story.
According to its research, among middle?aged couples in committed relationships, tenderness is often more important to the man than the woman; regular kisses and cuddling lead to greater relationship satisfaction in men than in their partners.
‘I put weight on due to illness and I’d started to dread sex,’ says Kathy Logan, 50, who runs an online business. ‘But once Alan reassured me that he was happy just to cuddle and he wasn’t expecting anything more, it was lovely.
‘We developed a whole new side to our relationship because it got us out of that push-pull situation that a lot of my friends also seem to be stuck in, where one of you wants sex and the other’s making excuses and feeling resentful. With us, that had gone on for years, and I’d gone right off sex.’
Knowing it wasn’t on the agenda meant Kathy and Alan, 49, could appreciate each other again, without any expectations.
‘I’ve lost a lot of the weight now, and we do have sex again,’ says Kathy. ‘But it’s so different because now we can both say “I’m not really in the mood tonight, shall we just cuddle?” without feeling like it’s second-best.’
Paula Hall says: ‘Inevitably, there are times when sex isn’t an option due to illness or stress. By keeping in touch with hugging, a couple can continue to express their love and affection for each other.’
That rings true for my friend Jo, who says: ‘Work is very stressful at the moment, and we’ve got a one-year-old who doesn’t sleep. Just lying with my head on Dave’s chest and his arm round me makes me feel so much more relaxed and calm. If he’s away for work, I become tense, and I know it’s because we haven’t had that vital physical contact.’
‘The great advantage of cuddling is that, unlike sex, you can do it anywhere, any time,’ explains Paula, ‘and enjoy all the benefits of feeling loved, cared for, protected and comforted.’
Suddenly, ‘Not tonight, darling, let’s just cuddle’ doesn’t seem like such a bad thing after all.

Syukur menambahkan, polisi awalnya mengira Bahrul menyamarkan aksi kejahatan.
Lokasi tempat Bahrul menjadi pocong memang dikenal menyeramkan.

Indonesia's Economic Growth Needs to be Increased

Hatta Rajasa

Indonesia’s economic growth still needs to be further increased to enable it to face the regional and global economic competition, Chief Economic Minister Hatta Rajasa said.
"The economic growth should be done with equitable and sustainable principles," the chief economic minister said in his written address read out by his expert staff for business competition Supriyadi at a management conference 2011 here on Saturday.
In his written address to the conference which was organized by Magister Management of University of Gajah Mada (UGM)’s Faculty of Economcs and Business, Hatta said that in order to achieve a targeted economic growth Indonesia was still facing various challenges. The challenges include the provision of infrastructure evenly throughout the region, given Indonesia is an archipelago with diverse geographical conditions.
"Development of transportation infrastructure in particular can enhance connectivity which is one of the requirements for an even distribution of economic growth," he said.
He said another challenge is the low number of industries oriented to increasing added values. This affected Indonesian products so that their values and capacity were low.
"The quality of human resources is another challenge facing the Indonesian nation. Currently about 55 percent of Indonesia’s labor force are still graduates of elementary schools and only 8.8 percent of the work force are graduates of diploma or degree programs," he said.
According to him, to achieve growth, even distribution and high sustainable economic development, a country required the acceleration of economic transformation.
He said that it could only be done with the mindset and outlook that the economy was built with joint collaboration between the central government, local government, state-owned firms, local government-owned enterprises and private sectors in an incorporated spirit.

Passing: Amy Winehouse has been found dead at her home

Amy Winehouse has been found dead at her home in London. The Back To Black singer was found at the property by emergency services at 3.54pm. Her death is being treated as 'unexplained' by police.
Winehouse was apparently 'beyond help' when paramedics arrived, according to Sky sources. Sources have also claimed Winehouse's death was due to a drug overdose.
Two ambulance crews arrived at the scene within five minutes and a paramedic on a bicycle also attended, according to a spokeswoman. 'Sadly the patient had died,' she added.
In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said: 'Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05hrs today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased.
'On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene.
'Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained.’
It is not known whether Amy’s father Mitch actually knows about his daughter’s death and Sky News have confirmed that he is currently on a plane to New York to take part in a Jazz festival.
Winehouse had been seen with her goddaughter Dionne Bromfield earlier this week as the teenager took to the stage at the iTunes festival. She refused to join in for Mama Said, but did support the 14-year-old with a few dance moves before urging the crowd to buy Dionne's new album Good For The Soul.
A source said: 'Amy staggered onstage and grabbed the mic to beg the crowd to buy her protege’s new album.'
Winehouse's appearance at the concert came after she cancelled her European tour following a disastrous performance in June when she stumbled onto the stage in Belgrade and gave an incoherent performance appearing very disorientated and removed from reality.
Following the concert which saw fans enraged and the subsequent video that circulated to millions she cancelled the remaining dates of her European tour.
A statement released by the troubled singer's spokesperson said that the singer would be given 'as long as it takes' to recover. The statement read: 'Amy Winehouse is withdrawing from all scheduled performances.
'Everyone involved wishes to do everything they can to help her return to her best and she will be given as long as it takes for this to happen.'
Winehouse had been working on her long-awaited new album, the follow-up to her 2006 breakthrough multi-million selling Back To Black, for the past three years.
Winehouse has had a troubled life which has included various stints in rehab for drug and alcohol addiction. In an interview in 2008, her mother Janis said she would be unsurprised if her daughter died before her time.
She said: 'I've known for a long time that my daughter has problems. But seeing it on screen rammed it home. I realise my daughter could be dead within the year. We're watching her kill herself, slowly.
'I've already come to terms with her dead. I've steeled myself to ask her what ground she wants to be buried in, which cemetery. Because the drugs will get her if she stays on this road.
'I look at Heath Ledger and Britney. She's on their path. It's like watching a car crash - this person throwing all these gifts away.'
As well her battles with drugs and alcohol, Winehouse also had a troubled marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil, who she divorced in summer 2009. Fielder-Civil and Winehouse married in 2007 in Miami. The pair's relationship - heavily documented by the media - saw them appearing in public bloodied and bruised after fights.
It is also alleged former music video producer Fielder-Civil was the one who introduced the Back to Black star to heroin and crack cocaine. Amy's father Mitch previously spoke out about how his daughter stayed away from drugs prior to meeting her ex-husband.
In a previous interview last year he said: 'He's not entirely responsible, she's got to take a portion of the responsibility, but it's clear, it really kicked off when they got together.'
Most recently, Winehouse was romantically linked to film director Reg Traviss, who she dated for a few months last year. And Mitch also gave the new man his seal of approval.
In an interview with STV's The Hour programme, he said: 'I'm happy she's got a new boyfriend. I'm happy that she's moving on with her life.' He said Traviss was a 'very nice, normal bloke'. The pair split in January this year but quickly rekindled their relationship.
In March, Traviss said: 'We've been together nearly a year now and we're very happy. Amy's doing well, she's fine. She's healthy and happy.' It is not clear whether the pair were still together at the time of her death.
Winehouse has also caused controversy with her weight over the past few years. After hitting the music industry as a curvy role model, Winehouse then shed an astonishing amount of weight, leading to her looking gaunt in 2008.
Amy had a hugely successful musical career with the release of her debut album Frank in 2003, and the record considered her breakthrough album - Back To Black in 2006.
The singer featured on the Sunday Times Rich List earlier this year with an estimated net worth of around £6million. During her career, Winehouse won awards including five Grammy Awards, a Q Music Award for Best Album for Back To Black and a World Music Award in 2008 for World's Best Selling Pop/Rock Female Artist.

33 Dead after Chinese Bullet Trains Collide

Rescue workers desperately try to free passengers from the wreckage of train after two carriages from a high-speed train derailed and fell off a bridge in Wenzhou in east Chinas Zhejiang province. The country has spent billions on constructing its high-speed rail network.

Emergency workers battled on Sunday to rescue survivors from the mangled wreckage of two Chinese bullet trains involved in a high-speed collision which left 33 dead and nearly 200 injured, reports said.
The first train had been halted by a lightning strike and was rear-ended by the second, state media said, causing two carriages to fall off a viaduct in a disaster likely to raise fresh questions over the safety of China’s rapid rail expansion.
Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao called for “all-out efforts” to rescue injured passengers, the official Xinhua news agency said. Railways Minister Sheng Guangzu, who was heading to the scene from Beijing, ordered an “in-depth investigation” into Saturday’s accident, the agency reported.
The high-speed service from Hangzhou to Wenzhou, in eastern China’s Zhejiang province, was rammed from behind in Wenzhou’s Shuangyu town, China National Radio said. It derailed and two of its carriages fell from an elevated section of track at around 8:27 pm (1227 GMT), Xinhua reported, citing the provincial government. Some 190 people were injured, it said.
Pictures posted on Chinese websites and microblogs showed a long rail carriage standing vertically, with one end leaning on the viaduct and the other resting on the ground about 20 metres (66 feet) below. A second carriage was lying fully on the ground below the track, having apparently fallen completely off, with rescue personnel swarming over it.
The photos also showed mangled metal sections of one carriage and people being carried away from the scene, although it was not clear whether those victims were injured or dead.
“We heard a ’bang’ and it felt like an earthquake,” Xinhua quoted one survivor, a woman surnamed Zhou, as saying.
“I immediately held my five-year-old kid to my arms,” she said. She and the child were injured but survived, Xinhua said.
Another, unnamed survivor, aged 40, told the news agency he had been trapped in a carriage with more than 60 other passengers after the crash. “We were trapped in the coach for more than one hour before five of us broke the window and crawled out,” he said. The five rescued another two passengers, but one died shortly afterwards, the man said.
Xinhua said the capacity of each train car was about 100 passengers. China National Radio quoted an unnamed Shanghai Railway Bureau official who had gone to the scene as saying the first train was halted by a lightning strike.
Xinhua said the train itself had been struck by lightning but other reports suggested it may not have been a direct hit. The first four coaches of the second train had also been knocked off the track by the force of the collision, Xinhua said.
The accident occurred less than a month after China inaugurated with great fanfare a new flagship $33 billion line from Beijing to Shanghai that halves the rail journey time between China’s two most important cities to five hours. The line has suffered delays caused by power outages, sparking a slew of criticism online and in Chinese media.
China has recently poured money into a further expansion of the network but the huge investments have spurred allegations of corruption and raised concerns over costs and whether corners were being cut on rail safety. In April 2008, 72 people were killed and more than 400 injured when one train derailed and another collided with it in the eastern province of Shandong.

The World's Biggest Dog

Martha Lochert Photography Mans biggest friend: Devoted owner Dave Nasser with George, the worlds biggest dog

The first time we saw George, our beloved Great Dane, he was no more than a tiny, cowering ball of fuzzy fur. As my wife Christie opened the door of the crate he’d travelled in, he teetered to a standing position and looked out at us, moving his head slowly from side to side, taking in the wonder of it all.
Finally, as if weighing us up and deciding we were acceptable, he tentatively pushed his little nose forward and gave Christie her first lick. Though it didn’t really register, George’s paws were comically large even then. But all we saw was this cute puppy.
We certainly never dreamed he would one day become the biggest dog in the world, standing nearly 4ft high at the shoulder, 7ft long and weighing nearly 18 stone. Right now, he just looked bewildered.
He came into our lives in January 2006, just a few months after we had married and set up home in Arizona. We both had busy jobs, Christie selling medical equipment while I was a property developer, but she had always planned that, once she had a house of her own, she would also have a dog.
She wanted a Great Dane as they make great family pets, so we tracked down a litter of 13, born 1,000 miles away in Oregon. Their owner emailed us a photo showing a chaotic jumble of paws, snouts and tails.
Twelve were entangled with one another, but our eyes were drawn to one pup standing apart from the rest. He was clearly the runt, endearing him to Christie immediately.
George made the long journey from Oregon to Phoenix by plane and we picked him up from the freight area, tired but unshaken. As soon as George settled into our home, we discovered our plans to be fair but firm parents were wishful thinking.
All the things that make Great Danes wonderful pets — their lack of aggression and their attachment to humans — make them more emotionally sensitive than other dogs.
They need to be with their ‘pack’ at all times and at night the cute pup with intensely blue eyes turned into a caterwauling banshee whenever we tried to leave him alone in the kitchen.
No matter how much we reminded ourselves that he had every home comfort (warm dog bed, warm blanket, warm kitchen, squeaky bone), each whimper created a picture in our heads of a tragic, abandoned pup, desperate for his mother.
Eventually, we gave in and shunted George’s dog bed into our bedroom. In the coming months, Christie really threw herself into being a mum to George. As well as a photo album, he had a growth chart — we were soon reading it in awe.
At five months he still acted like a puppy, chasing his tail and playing games of fetch and tug-of-war with his favourite bit of rope. But he was already the size of a fully-grown Labrador.
He was putting on more than a pound a day and he bounded around like Bambi, skittering on our wooden floors and hurling himself at everything he fancied, including us humans. His displays of affection could leave you pinned temporarily against a wall or a piece of furniture.
His size did not go unnoticed in the outside world. Our local park had a section for puppies but we were bullied out of it by other owners, who were scared George would hurt their pups, — but the opposite was true.
The smaller dogs ran around and under him, and he’d be constantly sidestepping them, obviously anxious and jittery. Slowly we realised that our enormous puppy was a big softie. Besides his terror of being left alone, he had a fear of water.
He’d growl anxiously at the side of our swimming pool, alarmed that his ‘pack’ members would so willingly place themselves in danger of drowning.
If the pool was his most-hated place, his favourite was our bedroom. Eventually he outgrew the single mattress we placed there for him and preferred instead the comfort of our king-sized bed — sprawling between us like some over-indulged prince while we spent half the night clinging onto the edges.
In the summer of 2006, we solved this problem by buying him his own queen-sized mattress, which he still sleeps on today at the bottom of our bed.
But soon we encountered another challenge as George reached doggie puberty. Once he had grabbed life by the lapels, now he was grabbing onto legs — table legs, chair legs, human legs, he wasn’t picky — and doing what all male dogs do with the vigour of a canine giant.
He calmed down in the furniture department after we had him neutered, but then he took up a new hobby, eating as if it were an Olympic sport.
A sausage on the barbecue was like a siren to a passing sailor. You couldn’t turn your back for a minute. And he was so tall that he actually had to bend down to pinch food off kitchen counters. He could reach the high shelves as well, so we had to hide everything away in cupboards. Soon, he was getting through around 100lb of dry dog food every month.
As he approached his first birthday in November 2006, weighing about 14 stone, it was getting physically impossible to make him go anywhere he didn’t want to — including the vet’s surgery. He had not forgotten the time he went there in possession of his manhood — and came out less than whole.
As soon as he recognised the entrance, he refused to move. So I had to take him around to the less familiar back door instead. For all these troubles, George gave us plenty in return, not least the following year when Christie lost the baby she was carrying.
Evidently tuned in to her grief, George was a constant presence at her side. When she sat, he sat too. When she stood, he stood and padded alongside her to wherever she was going.
His personality grew more delightful the bigger he got. A male Great Dane typically weighs from nine to 11 stone, but by Christmas 2007 George weighed 15 stone — bigger than most men. At this point, he loved being chauffeured around in my golf cart and would sit in it, his haunches on the seat and front legs on the floor.
By Christmas 2008, our canine colossus weighed 18 stone. A friend suggested he might be a contender for the Guinness Book Of Records, but we had other things to think about: Christie had discovered that she was pregnant again.
The trouble was, when our daughter Annabel arrived that September George made it clear he wanted nothing to do with this interloper. He was used to spending nights in delightful oblivion at the foot of our bed. Annabel’s high-decibel presence simply wasn’t on.
When she cried, he’d wake, harrumph and then turn over in annoyance. Once it was clear the racket was going to continue, he’d exhale heavily again, till one of us finished that mysterious feeding thing we did with the noisy intruder.
But while he might not have cared much for Annabel, George loved her dolls, especially a stuffed green one that played a nursery rhyme when squeezed. Whenever he could, he placed it between his paws and pressed it so he could hear the tune.
It was like a security blanket. It was a period of such big adjustment for him that if it made him happy, then it was fine by us and our patience was rewarded.
Slowly, George understood that Annabel was our pack’s youngest member and in need of his affection and protection. And on Christmas morning, he ended his three-month sulk, acknowledging her presence with a lick of her hand. It was the best present we could have had — although the beginning of 2010 brought more good news.
Over the previous weeks, while Annabel slept, Christie had applied to the Guinness World Records people on George’s behalf. That February, one of their adjudicators came to watch George being measured in the presence of a vet. He was officially declared not just the world’s tallest living dog (43 inches from paw to shoulder) but the tallest dog ever.
The following week we flew to Chicago to appear on the Oprah Winfrey Show and were put up in one of the city’s most luxurious hotels. We had a huge sitting room, dining area and even a bar — but there was just one problem. There was nowhere for George to sleep.
As we enjoyed a gourmet meal and a bottle of red wine that night, he struggled to settle on two roll-out divans provided for him. Infuriatingly, they wouldn’t stay together. So he had his head on one and back end on the other, but his stomach was sagging onto the carpet.
‘You know what we need to do,’ I joked. ‘Give George our bed to sleep on and have the divans in this room ourselves.’
Christie looked at me with a telltale gleam in her eye and I knew immediately my joke had been a fatal error. An hour later, our boy was sprawled in splendour in our huge, fluffy king-size bed.
‘Well,’ whispered Christie, ‘George is the star here, after all.’ She was right, of course, and since his appearance on TV, Giant George has built a following around the world, with his own fan club, website and 70,000 fans on Facebook.
None of this, of course, means anything to George. He still spends his days doing what he has always liked best: eating, playing and sleeping. Our cherished pet may have become a global celebrity — but really, he’s just one of the family.
