Some 199 Indonesians are facing the death penalty in Malaysia and China, according to the Indonesian Nationals and Migrant Workers Protection Task Force.
"In Malaysia, 177 Indonesian nationals are facing the death penalty. Some 138 people are in jail for their involvement in drug trafficking, 35 others for murder and three for illegal arms possession," Humprey S Jemat, a member of the Task Force, said here Wednesday. In China, 22 Indonesians were under threat of being sentenced to death for drug trafficking.
"They consist of 21 women and one man. They are all drug couriers," he said. Humprey stated the Task Force will not discriminate them based on the cases and will do the utmost to save them from the death penalty.
"They are all Indonesians and will be given legal defense optimally. The Task Force will of course look at the very critical cases first," he said. On Wednesday, the Task Force called Indonesian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Gatot Mansyur to discuss Indonesian migrant workers facing death penalty in the Middle East country.
On Thursday, they will call Indonesian ambassadors to Malaysia and China to get information about the fate of the troubled Indonesians there. A total of 216 Indonesian migrant workers are facing the death penalty in four foreign countries, according to foreign ministry records.
"Some 117 migrant workers are facing the death penalty in Malaysia, 20 in China, 17 in Saudi Arabia and two in Singapore," the director of Indonesian citizens’ protection and legal entities of the ministry of foreign affairs, Tatang Razak, said in a discussion on "Protection of Migrant Workers Abroad" recently.
According to data, the total number of Indonesians abroad at present reach 3,353,631 consisting of 2,029,528 migrant workers, 269,400 professional workers, 198,461 ship crews, 660,748 students and 190,496 citizens who married foreigners.
