Harry Wiriadinata Rafflesia rochussenii
Rochussenii Rafflesia flowers bloom for the first time in Cibodas Botanical Garden, West Java since Friday (07/01/2011) yesterday. Flowers that bloom has a diameter of 12 cm and a height of about 4 cm.
Head of Unit BKT Cibodas Botanical Garden, Dr. Educate Widyatmoko when contacted on Sunday (07/03/2011) says, "rochussenni Rafflesia flower is actually a native and endemic species of West Java."
Students explained that these species grow optimally at an altitude of 700 - 1400 meters above sea level. Typically, the Rafflesia rochussenii live in a damp forest floor and vegetation dominated by Fagaceae. This species is first spread in West Java, to Garut, Bandung South and Pelabuhan Ratu.
"Presumably there are currently only in the forests of Mount Gede and Mount Salak Mountain Pangrango," said Didik.
Students say, the conversion of forest land can be started because of the limited spread of this species. "Now the urgent conservation efforts are serious, otherwise it will be extinct," said Didik.
Conservation measures can be initiated by conserving forest land. According to him, the program at Mount Gede and Pangrango that already exist today can be continued and enhanced so that more optimal.
In addition, he said that Cibodas Botanical Garden itself is a step for the conservation of the species. "We try with ex situ. If we shall succeed, if needed we can return to nature," continued Educate.
According to Educate, information about the Rafflesia rochussenii still very minimal. Looking ahead, it is necessary to study the optimal environmental conditions are known to help conserve and cultivation in Cibodas.
Rochussenii relatives of Rafflesia Rafflesia are endemic to Sumatra and arnoldi patma Rafflesia is also growing in the Bogor Botanical Gardens. Rafflesia rochussenii differences with other species is at a smaller size.
